Which teams will be relegated from League 1 in the 2019-20 season?

In the 2018-19 season AFC Wimbledon, Southend United, Shrewsbury Town, Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle were all in danger of being relegated as they all finished within 3 points of each other, Plymouth Argyle were the unlucky ones in the end. I would expect a similar battle in the 2019-20 season with Lincoln City, Bury, Milton Keynes Dons and Tranmere Rovers all promoted from League 2 who will have a tough ask to stay in League 1.

AFC Wimbledon only managed to remain in League 1 last season as they had a better goal difference than Plymouth Argyle. They also decided to stick with the manager Wally Downes in the hope that he can turn things around, but it’s looking like they’re going to be in a relegation battle next season.

Southend United also retained their League 1 status last season by having a better goal difference than Plymouth Argyle. They finished in 19th place which was 2 places ahead of the relegation zone under Kevin Bond (albeit he was only in charge towards the end of the season) and the club clearly has faith in him as he’s in charge to lead them into another season in League 1.

Shrewsbury Town finished in 18th place in the 2018-19 season, 3 places ahead of the relegation zone and 2 points ahead of Plymouth Argyle. Welsh manager Sam Ricketts is still in charge and will be leading his team into a likely relegation battle in the 2019-20 season. Wycombe Wanderers finished 3 points ahead of the drop in 17th place as they held on to their League 1 status last season. Manager Gareth Ainsworth and Egyptian captain Adam El-Abd will want to make sure they can retain their League 1 status for another season once 2019-20 comes to a close.

Lincoln City, Bury and Milton Keynes Dons all achieved promotion automatically after dominant performances in League 2. We’ll have to wait and see whether they can transfer their success into League 1 but it’ll be a tough ask.

Tranmere Rovers had to achieve promotion the hard way after beating Forest Green Rovers in the playoff semi-final and then beating Newport County in the final. They may be the weakest of the four promoted teams but they’ve shown the maturity to go through via the playoffs and they’ll hope this can get them through a long season in League 1.

Another team who could likely be relegated are Bolton Wanderers, due to financial problems at the club they will begin the season on -12 points, therefore, they’re likely to be favourites to be relegated in the 2019-20 season.
