Who is Hammarby IF manager Stefan Billborn?

Stefan Billborn was born in Sweden on the 15th of November, 1972 and is the current manager of Hammarby IF. Billborn started his managerial career at the young age of 17 and started out at numerous youth teams at Rågsveds IF. Billborn coached many Swedish internationals such as Stefan Ishizaki, John Guidetti, Albin Ekdal, Ludwig Augustinsson and Kristoffer Nordfeldt who all went on to play in major tournaments.

Billborn joined IF Brommapojkarna in 1997 where he worked in different roles before being promoted to assistant manager of the first team in 2010 where he worked with Kim Bergstrand and then Roberth Björknesjö between 2010 and 2013.

In 2014, Stefan Billborn was made head coach of IF Brommapojkarna, however, was sacked at the end of the season after finishing in last place of the Allsvenskan with 12 points from 30 games. He left the club with a 6.67% win rate having won 2 games from 30 games including 6 draws.

Hammarby IF then appointed Stefan Billborn as the head of their youth academy in 2015 due to his excellent track record of producing great players. 2 years later Billborn was appointed assistant manager to head coach Jakob Michelsen.

In January 2018, Billborn signed a 3-year contract with Hammarby IF as their head coach taking over from the previous manager Jakob Michelsen. He then led the club to a fourth place finish, however, only made the group stage of that season’s Svenska Cupen.

The following season saw more improvements to the team where the club finished third in the Allsvenskan which guaranteed their spot in the 2020-21 UEFA Europa League campaign, their first European campaign in more than 10 years. The club also made the quarterfinals of the 2018-19 Svenska Cupen but lost to league winners Djurgårdens IF 4-2 on penalties.

These successful results meant that Stefan Billborn was given a new contract in January 2020 which will see him stay at the club until 2023. This will give Hammarby IF fans hope and will look forward to their upcoming Europa League campaign with experienced Billborn in charge.
