Who is IFK Göteborg manager Poya Asbaghi?

Poya Asbaghi was born in Karaj, Iran on the 17th of July, 1985 and is the current manager of IFK Göteborg. Asbaghi also managed Swedish sides Dalkurd FF and Gefle IF before joining IFK Göteborg in 2018.

In 2014, Poya Asbaghi joined Dalkurd FF as their assistant manager where he worked with head coach Andreas Brännström. Dalkurd FF is a club based in Uppsala and was founded by a group of Kurds.

In his first season as assistant manager, he helped Andreas Brännström and the club to a third place finish in the opening season in the Swedish third division, 1 point off being in the promotion playoffs.

The following season saw Poya Asbaghi and Andreas Brännström guide Dalkurd FF to the Swedish third division title on 61 points which gave them promotion to the Swedish Superettan. In Dalkurd FF’s first season in the Superettan, Asbaghi was promoted to head coach as the side finished 4th to round off a successful season.

In Asbaghi’s second season in charge, Dalkurd FF finished second in the Swedish Superettan and were promoted to the Allsvenskan. Asbaghi then had a short stint at Gefle where he finished the league in 12th place where he won 10 games out of a possible 21 with a win rate of 47.62%.

In 2018. Poya Asbaghi was appointed as IFK Göteborg manager where he led the side to a mid table position of 11th on 31 points in his opening season at the club. The following season saw Asbaghi lead IFK Göteborg to a 7th place finish in the table on 48 points which was an improvement on the previous season. Poya Asbaghi was also awarded the 2019 Allsvenskan Manager of the Year award due to his success with IFK Göteborg.

Because of Poya Asbaghi’s successful season and Allsvenskan manager of the year award, IFK Göteborg gave Asbaghi a new contract which would keep him at the club for another 3 years.
