Who is Helsingborgs IF manager Olof Mellberg?

Erik Olof Mellberg was born in Gullspång, Sweden on the 3rd of September, 1977 and is the current manager of Helsingborgs IF. Mellberg played football as a defender for many years and played for European clubs such as Juventus, Villarreal, Aston Villa and Olympiacos.

Olof Mellberg started his playing career at Gullspångs IF’s youth academy in 1994 before joining Degerfors IF in 1996. Mellberg then went on to play for AIK, Racing Santander, Aston Villa, Juventus, Olympiacos, Villarreal and Copenhagen between the years of 1997 and 2014. Over the course of his career, Mellberg made 543 competitive appearances scoring 22 goals from centre back.

Mellberg made 117 appearances for the Swedish National team and scored 8 goals in the process. He was able to play with legends of the game such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Freddie Ljungberg and Henrik Larsson. Mellberg was also able to compete in numerous FIFA World Cups and UEFA European Championships.

As a player, Olof Mellberg won the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Aston Villa, the Allsvenskan with AIK and numerous trophies in Greece in his time at Olympiacos. In his time at Juventus, Mellberg finished as a runner up in the 2008-09 Serie A season. Mellberg also won the Swedish Guldbollen in 2003 (which is given to the best Swedish player of that year) along with being named in the UEFA Euro 2004 all-star team.

In November 2015, Mellberg took the managerial job at IF Brommapojkarna after their recent relegation to the Swedish third division. In his opening season at the club, Mellberg guided the side to the title which promoted them to the Swedish Superettan. The following season saw IF Brommapojkarna promoted for a second successive season which led the club back to the Allsvenskan, however, Mellberg decided not to renew his contract.

2 years after leaving IF Brommapojkarna, Olof Mellberg joined Danish club Fremad Amager before moving on to Helsingborgs IF only 2 months after. Helsingborgs ended the season with Mellberg in charge and finished in a respectable 10th place with room to improve for next season.
