Who is Varbergs BoIS manager Joakim Persson?

Joakim Persson was born in Helsingborg, Sweden on the 3rd of April, 1975 and is the current manager of Varbergs BoIS. Persson made appearances in midfield and defence as a player at European clubs such as Atalanta, IFK Göteborg and Malmö FF.

His playing career started out at Högaborgs BK where he made many appearances for their youth team before joining Malmö FF in 1992. Persson made 54 competitive appearances for the club before joining Italian side Atalanta 4 years later, however, he didn’t feature in their first team very often and moved on to IFK Göteborg in 1998.

In his time at IFK Göteborg, Persson was under heavy criticism from the media and fans due to poor performances. He was also voted as the Allsvenskan’s most overrated player in 1998.

In 2000, Joakim Persson joined Danish side Esbjerg fB halfway through the season before they were relegated to the Danish second division. Persson stayed with the club after their relegation as he helped the club bounce back into the Superliga after winning the second division in their first attempt.

Persson had stints at Hansa Rostock, Stabæk and Landskrona BoIS before retiring from football in 2010. Joakim Persson made 27 appearances for the Swedish under 21’s National Team where he scored 8 goals. He also took part in the King’s tournament where he made all 3 of his international caps for Sweden. The Swedish National team went on to win the tournament with a 3-1 victory against hosts Thailand: a game in which Persson scored.

After retiring from football, Persson managed Ängelholms FF and Kristianstad FC between the years of 2011 and 2017 before joining Varbergs BoIS in 2018. In his first season at Varbergs BoIS, Persson finished 14th in the league, however, stayed in the league after winning the relegation playoffs.

The following season saw a huge improvement with the club finishing second in the league and were promoted into the Allsvenskan. They also reached the group stage of the Svenska Cupen where they finished last behind Hammarby IF, Dalkurd FF and Eskilsminne IF.
