Four Days of Dunkirk 2019

The Four Days of Dunkirk 2019, also known as the ‘4 Jours de Dunkerque’, is a professional cycling stage race taking place from Tuesday 14th May until Sunday 19th May. The has race been part of the UCI Europe Tour since 2005 and is a 2.HC classed race. Taking place in Dunkirk, France, the route takes the peloton around the Nord-Pas de Calais region of Northern France.

The current champion is Belgian cyclist Dimitri Claeys (Team Cofidis, Solutions Crédits), who won in 2018 ahead of German sprinter André Greipel (Team Arkéa Samsic) and Dutch cyclist Oscar Riesebeek (Team Roompot - Charles).

The 2019 race preview

Despite its name, the race is actually over a six-day period, with six stages:

Stage 1: Dunkerque - Condé-sur-l'Escaut. 180.7 km.

Stage 2: Wallers - Saint-Quentin. 181.6 km.

Stage 3: Laon - Compiègne. 156.5 km.

Stage 4: Fort Mahon Plage - Le Portel. 184.9 km.

Stage 5: Gravelines - Cassel. 181.5 km.

Stage 6: Roubaix - Dunkerque. 174.1 km.

The route starts and ends in Dunkirk, and the last stage includes sections of the famous Paris-Roubaix course.

Previous winners of the race also include Clément Venturini (Team AG2R La Mondiale) in 2017, Bryan Coquard (Team Vital Concept - B&B Hotels) in 2016, Arnaud Démare (Team Groupama - FDJ) in 2014 and 2013 and Rui Costa (UAE-Team Emirates) in 2009.

Niki Terpstra (Team Total Direct Energie) has announced his is racing this year and will be a hot favourite. Team Arkéa Samsic are also racing so expect Greipel to be a contender - Greipel could be joined on the start line by his teammate and French local Warren Barguil. Team Roompot - Charles will return so Riesebeek will have a chance at improving on his third-place finish last year. Team Jumbo-Visma has also announced a strong team including top challengers Tony Martin, Dylan Groenewege, Amund Grøndahl Jansen and Pascal Eenkhoorn.
