Cycling at the 2021 Summer Olympics – Men's BMX Racing

The men's BMX racing at the 2021 Summer Olympic is a type of off-road cycling race that is stated to run in Tokyo, Japan at the Olympic BMX Centre. The race is expected to be completed between 29 July and 30 July 2021.

BMX racing became a medal event under the UCI sanctioning body at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. USA BMX is accredited by the Olympic Committee under the International Cycling Union.

Sprint races on purpose-built off-road single-lap race trails are BMX cycling races. Typically, the circuit designs with a starting gate for up to eight racers, a serpentine, groomed, gravel racing course formed of different jumps and rollers, and a finish line. The course is typically flat, nearly 15 feet (4.6 m) extended, and has broad, angled inward corners that help the riders control the pace. Basically, the sport is very family-oriented and mainly participant-driven, with racers from 2 to 70 years of age and above.

The course is around 400 m long, and this is the one on which cyclists require the most safety protection including a full-face helmet, goggles, gloves, and long-sleeved protective equipment.

BMX racing is importantly a contact competition and onlookers could perceive riders push and bump each other in the confusion of the event, but a warning or disqualification results in a deliberate impediment to another competitor.

Race rankings of riders are decided based on time and points, but there may be no individual time trials at the Tokyo 2021 Games, unlike at the Rio 2016 Games. Six riders race over three rounds, in each of the four heats, with the top 16 advancing to the semi-final, and afterwards the top eight competing in the final.

In cycling road and track competitions, Europeans have historically been strong, but BMX racing medallists have come from non-European countries such as the USA, Colombia and Australia. The top athletes at the Tokyo 2021 Games are considered to come from France, Netherlands, the USA and Australia.

Recently Connor Fields (United States) has got the gold medal riding the BMX racing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He took his first position beating Jelle van Gorkom (Netherlands) and Carlos Ramirez (Colombia).
