Polish Liga Koszykówki Season 2018 Preview

In the previous several years we have been witnessing a huge leap forward by the Polish basketball.

This nation was always in the shadow on the international stage, but in the last 10 years, they have improved significantly.

That also refers to their national league Polska Liga Koszykówki. There are several clubs worth of mentioning, and we are going to try to represent this league in the best possible way, and also say a few words about the biggest contenders for the title.

Not so long ago, the Polish basketball always had at least one team in Euro League. The things have changed now because the Polish Basketball Federation sided with FIBA in the clash between them and ULEB.

This means that the Polish clubs are participating in FIBA Champions League and FIBA Euro Cup.

The biggest favorite for the upcoming season and the three-time consecutive champions are Stelmet Zielona Gora.

The boys from the Green Forest are currently dominating Polish basketball. The team is built from domestic players, and they are the team which gives 4 or 5 members of the Polish basketball national team. The difference in quality between this team and all the others is huge, and until the Polish Basketball Federation sided with FIBA Stelmet Zielona Gora was also putting down some solid performances in the Euro League.

The only team who can defeat them and who can win the title is Stal Ostrów Wielkopolski.

This team is rapidly improving from year to year. Back in 2012, they were in the third division, and during the previous campaign, they almost surprised Stelmet Zielona Gora in the semifinals of the playoffs. The final result was 2-3 unfortunately for them. There is no doubt that in the upcoming season this team is going to improve even more. We have several foreigners in Stal Ostrów, mostly players who came from America, who are dictating the modern type of basketball with a high tempo and versatility on all positions. Also, they have the MVP of the league, Shawn King, who has been practically unstoppable throughout this season.

The team who promised a lot in 2017 was Anwil Wloclawek, and they even finished in the first place after the regular part of the competition. But somehow they manage to lose in the quarter-finals after leading with two games to none. Anwil is a serious challenger for two teams above, but it seems that they need a little more consistency and experience.

This year's finalists Pierniki Toruń will try to repeat the same success but to be honest, they had some amazing performances which in our opinion cannot be repeated.

Of course, we cannot forget Trefl Sopot, one of the most famous clubs in Poland, who has been in some sort of a crisis lately and they might invest a little bit more money and make a respectable team. Along with 15000 seat arena, and noisy fans, in no time they can rise and become one of the leading forces in Poland.

We hope that this text helped you at least a little bit in understanding the Polish league and the best teams in that competition.
