Santos Tour Down Under 2020

Two days after the Schwalbe Classic 2020, the 22nd edition of the Santos Tour Down Under 2020 will begin in Adelaide. It will be the opening event for the UCI Pro Tour 2020 and will consist of 6 stages, from 21st to 26th of January.

The cyclists who will be on the Schwalbe Classic will take part in it, however, this tour will no longer be a simple exhibition.

Initially, it was a perfect stage race for sprinters, but in 2002 the organization began to include some mountainous difficulty to give the chance to win another type of riders. This first half mountain stage ended at Willunga Hill, and by the 2020 season, it will be the final stage of the tour. The sprinters will have their stage victory chances reduced to just 3 flat finals. That is why since 2002, only a pure sprinter, Andre Greipel, has managed to win the Tour Down Under.

- Stage 1: It will be ridden on a 30 km circuit with small mountainous difficulty, however, sprinters will be the top favorites to win the stage. 150 km in to reach the finish line.

- Stage 2: 135 km split over two leg-breaking circuits ending in Stirling. The finish line is after a small slope so more explosive riders will fight for victory.

- Stage 3: Stage designed for an explosive sprint in a slope, where cyclists like Sagan are very strong.

- Stage 4: 130km without noticeable mountainous difficulty, another opportunity for the fastest sprinters to fight to cross the finish line in the first place.

- Stage 5: Designed for a sprint, climbing to Kerby Hill, 5.9% could make a selection or lead to the attacks of some brave riders.

- Stage 6: The stage that will decide the general classification. Stage of 150km where the Willunga Hill will be climbed twice in the last 25km, at 7.5%. The end will be at the top, so the winner should be an explosive climber.

Preview of the course

As we have already said, the Santos Tour Down Under is a race that has been evolving towards a more leg-breaking profile, designed so that the most explosive riders win the general classification. With three stages with mountainous difficulty, it will be very difficult for sprinters to maintain the difference in seconds they will get through bonuses.

In the last two years, the South African Daryl Impey was the winner of the tour as he got bonuses in some of the stages and could keep up the rhythm of Richie Porte at the Willunga Hill stage. This stage seems designed for Porte, since in the last 6 editions of the Santos Tour Down Under, since 2014, he has achieved victory at this stage. Will he be able to achieve 7 victories at Willunga and his second Tour Down Under?
