Odd unit: EU | UK | US

Who is Barnsley’s manager?

Michael Duff is the current manager of Barnsley. Duff was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 11 January 1978 and was previously a professional footballer playing in defence for clubs such as Burnley, Cheltenham Town and Cirencester Town.

Duff started out in the youth academies of Darlington and Carterton Town up until 1996 where he got a move to Cheltenham Town. In his first season at the club, he went out on loan to Cirencester Town where he struggled to impress before coming back to Cheltenham Town. In the next few seasons however, Duff was the first choice for the club where he made 300 competitive appearances scoring 15 goals across an 8 year stint at the club.

Duff made a single appearance for Northern Ireland B before stepping up to the National team where he made 24 appearances. While playing for the National team, he took part in the 1-0 victory over England in 2005 and the 3-2 victory over Spain in September 2006. In July 2004, Duff joined Burnley for a reported £30,000 fee where he enjoyed a successful 12 year stint at the club from 2004 to 2016. He made 342 appearances for Burnley scoring only 7 goals for the side before retiring in 2016.

At Burnley, Duff won the Championship playoff in 2009, he then finished second in the Championship in 2014 before he won the Championship in 2016. At Cheltenham town he won the FA Trophy in 1998, the Football Conference in 1999 (runners up the year before) and the Football League third division playoffs in 2002.

After retiring in 2016, Duff took charge of the Burnley academy before being made manager of his former club Cheltenham Town in 2018. In his opening season at the club, Duff managed a 16th place finish along with two second round exits from the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. He also took the club to the third round of the EFL Trophy.

On 15 June 2022, Duff was appointed head coach of recently relegated side Barnsley on a three-year deal.
