Who will win the 2019-20 Belgian Pro League?

Many talented players have come from the Belgian Pro League in the past including Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard. There are also many quality players in the league now with players such as Wesley, Adrien Trebel and Ruud Vormer performing extremely well in the league.

The 2018-19 Belgian Pro League winners Genk will hope they can retain their title next season but will have strong competition from sides such as Club Brugge, Anderlecht, Gent and Standard Liege who will all believe they have a good chance of making a push for the title in the 2019-20 campaign.

At the end of the Belgian Pro League regular season, all teams in the top 6 positions on the table get put into the Championship playoffs where they start the playoffs on half their regular season points. The winner of the Championship playoffs wins the Belgian Pro League and gains automatic qualification to the Champions League group stages. Genk finished the regular season in first place on 63 points, they then went into the Championship playoffs and finished first again on 52 points securing the title and securing UEFA Champions League football for the 2019-20 season. Manager Felice Mazzu will hope the players can continue their good form next season if they are to have a good Champions League campaign.

Club Brugge finished the regular season on 56 points in second place before going into the Championship playoffs where they finished second again on 50 points. This meant that Club Brugge qualified for the Champions League third qualifying round and have a chance of playing Champions League football in the 2019-20 season. After finishing desperately close to the Belgian Pro League winners Genk, Philippe Clement’s Club Brugge will hope they can invest in the squad for the 2019-20 season and dethrone the champions.

Standard Liege finished in third place in the regular season on 53 points, they then finished third again in the Championship playoffs on 40 points and therefore qualifying for the Europa League group stages. Manager Michel Preud’homme will hope he and captain Sebastien Pocognolli can inspire the team if they are to improve on their third-place finish. Other teams who could pose a threat to title holders Genk are Anderlecht who had a disappointing 2018-19 campaign but now have Premier League winner Vincent Kompany as part of their backroom staff. Antwerp and Gent could also push for the title after finishing fourth and fifth in the Championship playoffs in the 2018-19 season.
