Burrows Saint Can Dig Deep To Win Grand National

Burrows Saint represents Willie Mullins’ best chance in the Randox Health Grand National this year and it could pay to back the 14/1 shot for the race as he ticks all the right boxes when it comes to the marathon contest.

The Irish horse was able to come out on top over hurdles at Punchestown on his last start. The field included former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Sizing John and Stratum who has recently prevailed in the Cesarewitch on the Flat.

Willie Mullins’ runner was ridden by Rachel Blackmore who opted to set a steady pace with her horse. When Sizing John came down with three fences to go, Burrows Saint went up a gear to ask questions of the rest of his rivals.

After jumping the last hurdle, Burrows Saint was clear of the pack of challengers and in no danger, eventually scoring by just over three lengths. Not only did Mullins train the winner, he saddled the second, third and fourth in the race.

This latest win shows how versatile Burrows Saint can be. It was the fifth success of his career and he now has victories at trips between 2m3½f-3m5f.

The Punchestown outing was a big step up from his seasonal reappearance at Fairyhouse. He was a long way behind in the Drinmore Novice Chase in third place of five in the contest which was won by Fakir D’oudairies, albeit at Grade One level.

The Grand National will almost definitely be in his connections’ mind now. The chaser has just Tiger Roll ahead of him in the betting as the defending champion has odds on 2020 Grand National of 15/2 as he looks to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Irish Grand National Win at Fairyhouse Proves He Can Prevail at Aintree

The most impressive win of Burrows Saint’s career so far came last April at Fairyhouse where he justified going off as the 6/1 favourite to win the Irish Grand National.

Remarkably, that was Mullins’ first win in the stayers’ contest. He did go close in 2018 with Isleofhopendreams who had to settle for second place after losing a photo-finish to General Principle.

With Ruby Walsh on board, Burrows Saint travelled smoothly in midfield throughout the 3m5f race in Ireland before hitting the front after the third fence from home. He kept on well under pressure in the run-in to the finish line to seal the win in the prestigious contest.

That victory at Fairyhouse was even more impressive when you consider he was just six years old then. By the time Aintree comes around in April, he will have much more experience under his belt over fences.

Mullins’ only success in the Grand National so far came in 2005 when Hedgehunter was the winner after going off as the 7/1 favourite. With Burrows Saint, he has a great chance of doubling his tally in the race. The talented chaser is open to further improvement which makes him the one to beat in the world’s most famous steeplechase on April 4.
