Wade Elliott – Cheltenham Town

Wade Elliott joined Cheltenham Town in 2020 but he was part of the stuff of manager Michael Duff. In June 2022 Elliott was promoted as first team manager as Duff left the club and he signed two years contract.

“It's been a very intense couple of weeks, but we believe we have arrived at the correct decision for Cheltenham Town Football Club at this moment in time. The Board set out with a clear criterion for the type of coach we wanted and one of the key requirements was to try and continue the excellent progress we have experienced over the last three years. I would like to thank my fellow director Paul Godfrey and our director of football Micky Moore for putting together a comprehensive selection process and we spoke to a number of outstanding candidates for the role. In the end we believed that Wade's knowledge and understanding of the club, its staff and players made him uniquely placed to take us forward” said club’s chairman David Bloxham.

Elliott started his professional football career as a player in Bashley. Then he moved to Bournemouth where he spent 5 years. In 2005 he made transfer to Burnley where he stayed for 6 years. He joined Birmingham before finally to join Bristol City where he ended his career as a player. In Bristol City he started his career as manager and was also caretaker of the first team for some time. “I enjoyed that experience, which is probably the key thing,” he said. “Some people go into caretaker roles and hate it because it’s completely different, but I enjoyed the responsibility and the cut and thrust of match days. We were in the relegation zone and it was the middle of the transfer window, so I had a lot thrown at me in a short space of time, but I soaked up as much as I could from that experience and tried to apply it to my learning.” He then was appointed as manager of Stoke City U23 squad.

Elliott knows how it is to win something with Cheltenham Town as he was part of the team that won English League Two in 2020/21 season.

“I learned you can only lead by being yourself and you can’t ape anyone else,” Elliott said. “You can’t have a perceived idea about what leadership is and try and think you have to play up to it because if you are not authentic people will see through it and you won’t be credible. I have never been a screamer or a bawler, but I have tried to do things properly, led by example, and be reliable for people. Anyone who has got to know me well enough will know that if something needs to be said, I will say it and I am not afraid of making my point, so that’ll be my style and the manner I’ll look to lead in.”
