The Danish Handball League, officially known as 888ligaen for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top Danish professional handball league that is going to have its 82nd season in 2017-18. The winners of the Danish Handball League are recognised as the Danish handball champions.

The Danish Handball League season consists of 14 teams, each playing 26 regular season games. The eight best teams of the regular season advance to further games, where they are divided into two groups of four teams each. No. 1 and 2 from the regular season start with 2 points. No. 3 and 4 start with 1 point, while no. 5-8 start with no points. After these six games the two group winners meet in the championship finals, while the runners-up will play for the bronze medals. Both the finals and the bronze matches are played as a "best of 3" series. The lowest placed team of the regular season is directly relegated to the second-best division, and replaced by the winner of this. The teams finishing as 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 will together with no. 2, 3 and 4 from 1st division be divided in two groups of four teams each. The group winners and the runners-up will qualify for the league in the next season. No. 3 in each group will meet each other in up to three games to play for the last spot in the league. The loser and no. 4 in each group will play the 1st division the following season.

The four best teams of the regular season advance to playoffs, semi finals and finals. Both semi finals as well as the final are played as a "best of 3" format.

The winner of 2016-17 is Aalborg Håndbold, a team which got for the 3rd time in team’s history the biggest title of the Danish handball. Winning the regular season by winning 20 of the 26 matches, Aalborg got through a challenging group of play-off in which 3 out of the 4 teams finished with 9 points in the lead, the actual champion of the country and Skjern Håndbold advancing thanks to the goal difference rule, letting GOG Håndbold behind. In the semifinal, Aalborg also had few emotions against Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, going into the deciding 3rd match in which the team prove that they were better and advanced. In the big final of the season, they faced Skjern Håndbold winning in the 2nd match after finishing 26-26 in the first.

The 2017-18 season is going to be as excited as the previous one. With a lot of teams that have the power of climbing the ranking up to n1 place, the most followed sport of the Scandinavian country will provide again a combination of quality, sportsmanship and fight. Despite of the current champions, Aalborg, the teams that will definitely be looking forward to impress will include Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, TTH Holstebro, Skjern Håndbold and GOG Håndbold. Of course, teams that used to be on the top of the ranking in the past but lacked in impressing in the last season, such as KIF Kolding København and HC Midtjylland, should not be forgotten.
