Who is Derby County manager Phillip Cocu?

Phillip John William Cocu was born on the 29th of October, 1970 in Eindhoven, Netherlands and is the current manager of Derby County. Cocu previously played professional football as a midfielder for European sides such as FC Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Vitesse Arnhem and AZ Alkmaar. He also made over 100 appearances for the Dutch National team scoring 10 goals along with a fourth place finish in the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Philip Cocu started his playing career at AZ Alkmaar in 1988 where he went on to make 50 competitive appearances scoring 8 goals. Vitesse Arnhem signed Cocu in 1988 for €272,000, he went on to make 137 appearances and scored 25 goals in an impressive spell at the club.

PSV Eindhoven triggered the release clause in Philip Cocu’s contract as he signed for the club in 1995. He had 2 spells at PSV where he won 4 Eredivisie titles, 2 KNVB Cups and 2 Johan Cruyff Shields. In 1998, FC Barcelona signed Cocu on a free transfer after beating the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus to his signature.

After retiring from football, Cocu went into management joining the coaching staff of the Dutch National team as an assistant manager. He joined PSV Eindhoven in 2012 as a caretaker manager before being the full time manager in 2013. During his time at the club, he led the side to 3 Eredivisie titles, 2 Johan Cruyff Shields and a KNVB Cup.

Fenerbahçe appointed Cocu in 2018, however, was sacked just a few months later following a disappointing spell at the club. In 2019, Philip Cocu replaced Chelsea-bound Frank Lampard as head coach of Derby County. He led the side to a 10th placed finish in his first season at the club and will be hoping to climb the table going into next year’s campaign.
