Fiorentina – Giuseppe Iachini

With Christmas just days away, Giuseppe Iachini has been appointed manager of Serie A under-achievers Fiorentina. The club currently sits in 15th place in the league having not won in any of their last five games and having only won on four occasions all season. Before a ball was kicked, the season looked to be shaping up in promising fashion for the Florence-based team. They signed Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich and Vincenzo Montella was riding the crest of a wave following a positive introduction to life at the club.

Giuseppe Iachini, the man who replaces Montella, was born Marche, Italy 1964. He is more than familiar with his surroundings at Fiorentina having played for the club for five years in the last 80s and early 90s. Nearly a decade before he joined the club, Iachini began his footballing education with Ascoli. He graduated to the senior squad in 1981 and played, mostly as a utility player, for six years, making 81 appearances and scoring nine goals.

He moved clubs for the first time in his career in 1987 when he made a fruitful switch to Verona. He spent two seasons there. During this time, he established himself as a senior first team regular for the first time in his career, making 47 league appearances in this time, scoring once. His solid performances earned him a move to Fiorentina, the club where, it transpired, he would play more football than at any other club. In his six years for the club he became something a fan favourite - this is probably a determining factor in his replacing of Montella.

After his stint in Florence, Iachini moved to Palermo where he again was regular first team player, appearing 62 times and scoring once. He spent the rest of his career the lower division of the Italian football pyramid. In total, he made 426 league appearances in his career, scoring 15 times from midfield. Once he entered the managerial game, it was Venezia who came calling for his services, he held the Director of Football role with the club for a year before moving to Cesena in 2002. Between then and 2020, he managed four different clubs with varying levels of success, all of them in the second or lower tiers.

Since then his managerial profile has risen. He had two stints with Brescia, one with Sampdoria and two with Palermo before landing a job with Udinese in 2016. He then underwent year with Sassualo and then Empoli which was his last job before the Fiorentina gig, which some see as a big step up for the Italian.
