Giro d'Italia 2020

The 103rd edition of the Giro d'Italia is a road race in stages that will be held between 9th May and 31st May 2020, starting in the city of Budapest in Hungary and ending in the city of Milan in Italy. The route consists of a total of 21 stages over a total distance of 3579 km.

The Giro 2020 will start with 3 stages in Hungarian territory, the first of which will be an 8.6km time trial prologue in Budapest. In total the race will have 3 time trials, a total of 58.8 km, the second one of 33.7 km in stage 14 and the last one of 16.5 km to close the Giro in Milan on 31st May. The mountain will be a great protagonist with 6 high finish lines in Agrigento, Etna, Piancavallo, Madonna di Campiglio, Laghi di Cancano and Sestriere. Most of the mountain stages are reserved for the last week of the race where the alps will be climbed.

The race is part of the UCI WorldTour 2020 circuit within the category 2.UWT and is the first of the so-called Grand Tours of the 2020 season.

Preview of Giro d’Italia 2020

After the first time trial in the Hungarian capital, of almost 9 kilometers and the first final at 1,800 meters high in Etna, a consistent first pink jersey will be defined, which must be confirmed upon arrival at Camigliatello Silano, shortly after the ascent to Valico from Montioscuro (1618 meters altitude).

The second week will undoubtedly be starred by the individual time trial of almost 34 kilometers of Valdobbiadene, two days after the brittle and demanding day with departure and finish in Cesenatico, the hometown of Marco Pantani, an idol in Italy. Two big efforts for the pink maglia aspirants who should finish off with the second high finish line in Piancavallo, after three other climbs during the stage.

After the always dangerous second day of rest, the Giro, faithful to its style and to exploit the immovable geography, has prepared a select, hard and agonistic menu with marathon mountain days exceeding 200 kilometers. San Daniele Friuli will be the appetizer with a classic final in circuit that will precede the orographic appointments with a goal in Madonna di Campiglio (4 mountain passes), the unprecedented Laghi Cancano after the Passo dello Stelvio if the weather and the foreseeable snow allow it, and then the “gift” for the surviving sprinters in Asti of only 251 kilometers, the so-called "French taponne” with arrival in Sestriere after climbing Agnello, Izoard and Montgenevre. The last chance for climbers to avoid defeat during the individual time trial in Milan as the one infringed by Dumoulin to Quintana in 2017.

Top Competitors

It is still very soon, but there are already many cyclists confirmed for the Giro d'Italia 2020, like Peter Sagan who will compete for the stages with a flat or explosive final, he will finally make his debut in the Giro.

The current champion, Richard Carapaz will also compete to defend his victory in 2019 and is a clear favorite for the final victory. It will be supported by your team, Team INEOS.

Other important names of the Giro 2020 can be Vincenzo Nibali, Jacob Fuglsand, Rafal Majka or Romain Bardet. All of them will contribute to the show in the Italian mountains.
