Who will win the 2020/21 Ligue 1 title?

Paris Saint Germain have dominated the French league for years now and they continued this trend by winning their 9th title in the 2019/20 season. Next season will be important for many teams in France as another PSG title win would see them become the joint most successful French club of all time alongside Marseille and Saint-Etienne with 10 titles each.

Paris Saint Germain were declared champions after the coronavirus pandemic cancelled the Ligue 1 season in 2019/20. They’ll be heavy favourites to win the league next season because of their talent-filled squad which features some of the best players in the world such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Marquinhos. They also have a world class youth academy which is helped by the first team manager Thomas Tuchel who is always ready to give youngsters a chance.

Lyon had a poor 2019/20 season with a seventh place finish in the league, due to this league standing they won’t compete in any European competition next season. This could be a good thing for their title ambitions however, as the club will be able to concentrate on the league whereas clubs like PSG will put more effort into the Champions League.

PSG’s bitter rivals Marseille finished in second place which gave them Champions League football for the first time in six years. The club have talented players such as Morgan Sanson, Dimitri Payet and Steve Mandanda, however, their squad could be stretched extremely thin if they are to compete on both fronts.

In the 2019/20 season, Rennes qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history after finishing in third place. Rennes also have quality players in their squad such as Raphinha, Clément Grenier and star youngster Eduardo Camavinga. Their season could very well depend on whether or not they can convince Camavinga to stay at the club who’s been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and PSG.

AS Monaco are also in consideration for the league title with the league’s joint top scorer Wissam Ben Yedder having an incredible 2019/20 campaign. If their top players can stay in form, the club could be in for another title run as they did in 2016/17.
