Who will win the 2019-20 Northern Irish Football League?

In the 2018-19 Northern Irish Football League (or the NIFL) finished as they crowned Linfield FC as the champions which was their 5th title in the 11 years that the league has been running for. In the 2019-20 season, Linfield FC, Ballymena United, Glenavon and Crusaders will all believe they have a good chance at winning the title.

David Healy’s Linfield won the 2018-19 NIFL title finishing first in the table on 85 points, this meant they qualified for the Champions League first qualifying round for the 2019-20 season. They’ll hope they can replicate this success going into next season as they hope to compete on both fronts, the NIFL and the Champions League qualification process. Ballymena United managed by David Jeffrey will hope to improve on 2018-19’s second place position by going one better and winning the title in the 2019-20 season. Last season’s 78 point finish meant that they had qualified for the Europa League preliminary round and they have a chance to qualify for European football next season.

Glenavon finished the 2018-19 season in third place after finishing the season on 70 points and this meant that they guaranteed their spot in the Europa League playoffs for the 2019-20 season. Player-manager Gary Hamilton (who wears number 80 for the club) will hope he can guide the club to the title in the 2019-20 season or at least have a higher finish than last year.

Fourth-placed finishers in the 2018-19 season were Crusaders FC who ended up on 65 points and qualified for the first round of Europa League qualifying under manager Stephen Baxter. He and captain Colin Coates will hope they can push for the title in the 2019-20 season and maybe even qualify for the group stages of the Europa League.

A possible outsider to win the 2019-20 Northern Irish Football League are Cliftonville FC. Managed by Northern Irishman Paddy McLaughlin, they finished last season on 61 points finishing 5th as they secured Europa League preliminary rounds after winning the NIFL Europa League playoffs. They did this also with NIFL top scorer Joe Gormley who scored 20 goals in the 2018-19 campaign.

All five of these teams will believe they have a genuine chance to win the 2019-20 Northern Irish Football League and will hope they can recruit well this summer and push on for a title race next season.
