Who will be relegated from the Serie A 2019-20?

With the arrival of Brescia, Lecce and Hellas Verona from the 2018-19 Serie B season, we look ahead to the upcoming Serie A relegation battle in the 2019-20 season. After teams like Genoa, Fiorentina and Cagliari narrowly avoiding the drop, they’ll be hoping for stronger campaigns this time around.

Brescia won the 2018-19 Serie B on 67 points, this gave them automatic promotion to the Serie A after an 8 year absence. Under manager Eugenio Corini, if they are to survive the drop in the 2019-20 season they’ll have to hope the club can recruit in vital positions across the field. The fans will hope the club can keep hold of top scorer Alfredo Donnarruma who scored 25 goals last season to help with the title race. If Brescia are to stay in the Serie A next season he is going have to be on top form.

Lecce finished second in the 2018-19 Serie B on 66 points, this was only 1 point behind an impressive Brescia team who won the title. This guaranteed Lecce’s automatic promotion to the Serie A as they begin their preparations to stay in the top flight. Head coach Fabio Liverani will be hoping that 30 year old captain Marco Mancosu will be able to inspire the players as there’s unlikely to be many funds available for transfers this summer.

The 1984-85 Serie A winners Hellas Verona reclaim their Serie A spot after an inspiring comeback against Cittadella solidified their promotion. Hellas Verona finished in fifth place on 52 points as they found themselves in a playoff battle for promotion. Next season, however, Hellas Verona will be hoping to stay in the Serie A under manager Alfredo Aglietelli and captain Giampaolo Pazzini, but a relegation battle seems likely.

Genoa and Fiorentina finished in 17th and 16th places respectively on 38 and 41 points in last years Serie A. Both teams have talent filled squads neither of whom will want to be relegated in the upcoming 2019-20 season. Genoa will hope to make some signings as will Fiorentina but they struggle to keep hold of star players such as Veretout and Lafont as possible interest from European clubs is looming.

Brescia, Lecce and Hellas Verona will all struggle to adapt to the fast-paced life of Serie A as they begin their battle for survival. Teams such as Genoa, Fiorentina and Cagliari will hope to improve on their 2018-19 campaigns as they push for a more mid-table finish.
