Who is Shrewsbury Town FC manager Sam Ricketts?

Sam Ricketts is a 37 year old Welsh manager born in Aylesbury, England on 11 October 1981, he is the current manager of Shrewsbury Town FC and was previously a professional footballer playing in defence for clubs such as Swansea City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City.

As a player, Sam Ricketts played for 9 different clubs around England and Wales from 2000 to 2016 where he retired at Coventry City. He made 495 career appearances scoring only 12 goals which does not including his 52 caps for the Welsh National football team and the England C team. Ricketts won the 2005-06 football league trophy at Swansea City along with gaining promotion from the English League Two the season beforehand.

Individually, Sam Ricketts won awards for being named in the PFA Team of the year in the 2004-05 League Two season with Swansea City and the 2013-14 League One season with Wolves. He also won the 2008 Championship playoffs with Hull City after they triggered his £300,000 release clause in 2006 and captained Wolverhampton Wanderers to the 2013-14 Football League One title after they signed Ricketts on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers in 2013.

Although Sam Ricketts remained as the club captain the following season, he barely appeared for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship before deciding he would take on a coaching role at the club. He then went to Swindon Town on loan towards the end of the season where he reached the playoff final with his loan side.

After retiring in November 2016 at Coventry City due to a knee injury, Ricketts decided to go into management roughly a year and a half later at Wrexham. After impressing at Wrexham leaving the club at fourth in the table, Ricketts joined bitter rivals Shrewsbury Town in December 2018 and guided the side to an 18th place finish which guaranteed their survival in the EFL League One.

Next season, Shrewsbury Town will be aiming for a mid table finish as Ricketts prepares to build his team for the upcoming season. Although Sam Ricketts lacks experience, he brings a breath of fresh air to the club and his philosophy should be enough to keep Shrewsbury Town afloat next year. He’ll want to do well if he is to impress any clubs who could be on the lookout for a new manager and next season he’ll certainly get his chance.
