Who will win the 2020 Super Rugby tournament?

The Super Rugby tournament consists of 15 teams, 5 from New Zealand, 4 from Australia, 4 from South Africa, 1 from Argentina and 1 from Japan. The 2019 tournament was the 24th edition and after the Crusaders beat the Jaguares in the 2019 Super Rugby final 19-3, we now look ahead to the 2020 edition of the tournament and see who will be favourites going into the upcoming campaign.

New Zealand side Crusaders have won the past 3 Super Rugby championships in a row and will want to continue their dominance going into the 2020 season. After winning the 2019 tournament (which was their 10th title) captain Sam Whitelock and head coach Scott Robertson will hope to inspire the players to retain their title in the upcoming season.

The lone Argentinian side in the tournament had a successful 2019 tournament after reaching the final only to lose to the Crusaders 19-3. The club was founded in 2015 and joined the Super Rugby championships in 2016 due to the recent success of the Argentinian National team and therefore the Jaguares were founded. Head coach Gonzalo Quesada and captain Jerónimo de la Fuente will want to push the largely Argentinian group of players in the right direction and will believe they can upset the odds and win the tournament.

Dan McKellar’s Brumbies side finished third last year and only managed to reach the semi finals of the tournament. The Australian outfit will want to win only their third title next season as they look to continue their dominance as the best Australian side in the competition. They have an extremely talented set of players including captain Christian Lealiifano, Scott Sio, Tevita Kuridrani and David Pocock.

The Hurricanes finished fourth last year and successfully made it to the semi finals losing to eventual winners the Crusaders. Head coach John Plumtree will want to overthrow the Crusaders next season as they look to regain not only the Super Rugby title, but the bragging rights of being the best team in New Zealand. Captain Dane Coles along with hugely influential players Nehe Milner-Skudder and TJ Perenara will want to push the team on to great things next season if they are to do well. Other teams that could upset the odds are South African teams the Bulls and the Sharks along with New Zealand sides the Chiefs and the Highlanders.
