The US Open: the last grand slam of the year, home to the biggest tennis stadium in the world and possibly the most electrifying and loudest crowd of all the circuit. This tournament has seen it all, from incredible upsets to commanding victories, from Billie Jean King to Martina Navratilova to Serena Williams, and most recently to the 19-year-old Canadian prodigy Bianca Andreescu. The Women’s US Open has the most prize money from all the tournaments in the WTA, with Angélique Kerber taking home an unbelievable 3.5 million dollars in 2016!

However, Bianca Andreescu’s motivation would’ve been to become part of the all time greats to win this tournament, and she managed to defeat the most decorated player in history, Serena Williams. Could the same final play out again next year? These two players are the favourites to lift the trophy in 2020, with bookies putting Serena Williams at 6/1 to win and her Canadian counterpart at 8/1.

It is not surprising that Serena is the favourite with 23 Grand Slam victories under her belt, however her performances in her last four Grand Slam finals have been far from the exceptional standards she has set for herself, with only 26 games won and four straight set defeats. Ashleigh Barty, who won the French Open earlier in the year and who has just reclaimed the number one ranking in women’s tennis is also a favourite, with odds of 10/1. The unorthodox Australian player took a hiatus from tennis to become a professional cricketeer, and her chip and charge technique often takes her opponents by surprise.

Simona Halep is the next favourite, with odds of 11/1. After her victories in France in 2018 and Wimbledon of this year, she is no stranger to Grand Slam victories, and her consistent play is almost impossible to disregard when trying to predict the winner of any Grand Slam. She has been the world number one for over a year throughout her career after all.

A likely winner also comes in the shape of twenty-one-year-old Naomi Osaka, who beat Serena Williams in last year’s US Open final to lift her first Grand Slam title, winning the Australian Open at the beginning of this year. The Japanese player grew up in the United States, and has the experience and quality needed to repeat her victory of two years ago, at odds of 13/1.

However, with only Serena Williams winning more than three Grand Slam titles since 2010 and a huge 18 winners other than the American powerhouse, next year’s Open could really be anyone’s. The exciting Caroline Garcia from France could pose a threat if she’s able to gain some confidence and starts playing some regular tennis, and at odds of 81/1, it’s certainly tempting. Sharapova, Muguruza, Svitolina and Kerber are just some of the other players who definitely are capable of emerging victorious in a year at the Arthur Ashe stadium.
