Championship relegation 2019/2020

Odd unit: EU | UK | US

Which teams will be relegated from the Championship in the 2019-20 season?

Luton Town, Barnsley and Charlton Athletic were all promoted from League 1 last season and they’re facing an uphill battle to retain their Championship status. Other teams that are likely to be in a relegation battle in the 2019-20 season are Millwall, Reading, Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic.

Luton town finished their 2018-19 season very strong after winning the League 1 on an impressive 94 point total with top league scorer James Collins adding a total of 25 league goals under caretaker manager Mick Harford. Now the managerial job has been given to Graeme Jones as the club hope he and Irish captain Alan Sheehan can lead the club to Championship survival.

Barnsley finished second in League 1 in their 2018-19 campaign on 91 points which assured their automatic promotion to the Championship. Now Barnsley are going into a highly competitive league under German manager Daniel Stendel and Welsh captain Adam Davies and will hope they can repeat their success in the Championship.

Charlton Athletic finished third in the 2018-19 League 1 season on 88 points and achieved promotion through the playoffs beating Sunderland at Wembley 2-1 which assured their 2019-20 Championship status. On paper Charlton are the weakest of the three new sides under English manager Lee Bowyer and captain Chris Solly.

Millwall finished 21st in the Championship last season on 44 points to cap off an uninspiring season under manager Neil Harris and Welsh captain Steve Morison. It’s hard to see Milwall doing much better next season unless they recruit well in key areas around the field, therefore it looks likely that they’re in for another relegation battle next season.

Reading finished last season on 47 points in 20th place, 7 points above the relegation zone under Portuguese manager Jose Gomes. Although they finished well above the relegation zone there will be tough competition coming from the three promoted teams from League 1 (Luton, Barnsley and Charlton Athletic) so they’ll have to keep consistent form across the season.

Newly appointed Mark Warburton’s Queens Park Rangers and Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic both finished in 19th and 18th place boasting a total of 51 and 52 points respectively. Both teams like Reading will have to do better next year since the promoted teams from League 1 are hungry and are ready to pile on the pressure in the new campaign.
