Who will win the 2020/21 Eredivisie title?

Due to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, there was no Champion of the 2019/20 Eredivisie despite Ajax finishing the league in first place. Ajax have been the dominant team in the Netherlands for a few years now after winning the 2018/19 league title and reaching the semifinals of that season’s UEFA Champions League.

Ajax will be heavy favourites going into the 2020/21 Eredivisie campaign. They have by far the strongest squad in the league with stars such as Donny van de Beek, David Neres, Quincy Promes and André Onana. Their season will heavily depend on whether or not these players stay at the club in the upcoming transfer window. Goalkeeper Onana has been linked with top clubs such as Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain which would be detrimental to the club’s title chances if he were to leave.

AZ Alkmaar ended up in second place in the table before the league was cancelled due to the coronavirus. They have experienced player in defence in Ron Vlaar, however, they have talented youngsters such as Calvin Stengs, Myron Boadu and captain Teun Koopmeiners. If they can keep hold of these youngsters and get the best out of Vlaar before his contract expires, they could be chasing Ajax for the title next season.

Ajax’s “Der Klassieker” rivals Feyenoord will be looking for their first title since the 2016/17 season next year and will be in with a shot of the title after finishing in third place in the league last season. They have some solid players in Orkun Kökcü, Luis Sinisterra and captain Steven Berghuis which will be instrumental in their chase for the 2020/21 league title. If the club can add a few names in the summer transfer window, they’ll be a big threat to favourites and arch-rivals Ajax.

PSV Eindhoven won the Eredivisie in the 2017/18 season after their dominance of the Dutch league between the years of 2014 and 2016. They have a few star youngsters who should be ready for a title challenge next season, these players are Donyell Malen, Mohamed Ihattaren and Denzel Dumfries.
