Eurovision 2020

Eurovision is an annual singing spectacle that sees European nations battle it out on TV for the title of best music act. This year the competition was held in Tel Aviv, Israel and was won by Netherlands performer Duncan Laurence. This will be the fifth time Holland has hosted the competition, the last time coming back in 1980 when 1978 and 1979 winners Israel declined to hold the event for a second consecutive year.

It’s not yet confirmed when the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 will take place, but it’s likely to fall between the middle and end of May. The date will likely work around the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, as well as a few other key sporting events.

The exact location of the 2020 contest has yet to be determined, but previous Dutch host cities have included The Hague, Amsterdam and Hilversum.

The EBU provides guidelines for hosting the contest. The ideal venue seats around 10,000 and has space for 1,500 journalists alongside the green room and delegate facilities. It should be free of pillars that obstruct the view and have a ceiling height of at least 16 metres. The host city needs at least 2,000 hotel beds spread across a range of prices. There must be a nearby international airport and good public transport.

According to Dutch media portal AD NL Rotterdam’s  ESC 2020 hosting bid is 80% ready. The City of Rotterdam is working closely with its potential venue Rotterdam Ahoy in order to bring the competition to Rotterdam. A special steering group has been set up specially for the occasion. The Municipality of Rotterdam will reportedly contribute financially to host the event if Rotterdam wins the bid.

The Dutch capital of Amsterdam is an obvious choice as the city already has a buzzing tourism industry and is equipped to deal with swathes of people. It’s also got several large venues such as the Ziggo Dome and the Johan Cruijff ArenA which have the capacity to deal with the event.

Apart from Amsterdam and Rotterdam, there are five cities in The Netherlands that already applied to host the contest and are willing to make a bidbook. Some options could be quite serious. Others are not very realistic to those who follow Eurovision for many years and know what it takes.

Maastricht, a city in the deep south of The Netherlands, has a congress centre MECC and wants to get the event. It would be a symbolic gesture, because of the The Maastricht Treaty for European integration.

The Hague is a relatively large city as well. But The Hague wants to build a roof over their football stadium, in the middle of the football season. Ambitious plans like these are something the EBU has never been too fond of.

Gelredome in Arnhem is also struggling with football obligations – though it must be said that this stadium already has a roof. However, EBU requires that the Eurovision venue is ready at least 6 weeks prior to the competition. During that time, local club Vitesse is still in the middle of its competition.

The cities of Leeuwarden (in Fryslan), Utrecht and Zwolle also made their interest clear. However, it is hard to imagine that The Netherlands, proud of their first victory since 1975, would choose a city that does not ring a bell to people outside the borders.

2019 brought us a controversial half-time performance from Madonna. No details yet on who will grace the stage in 2020, but it’s likely that 2019 winner Laurence will be involved in some capacity, potentially belting out a tune during the semi-finals.
