Who is going to win the 2020/21 German Cup?

The German Cup is the annual domestic cup competition in Germany. It starts with 64 teams participating, with the competition to begin on September the 11th. The winner of this competition automatically earns qualification for the Europa League Group Stage for the next season and if they have already qualified for the Champions League, then the team in 6th place qualifies for the Europa League. The winner will also host the DFL-Supercup at the start of the next season.

In last season’s competition, Bayern Munich ran out worthy winners after beating Bayer Leverkusen in the final, with Robert Lewandowski finishing as top goal scorer. This was their 20th title win. It is fair to say that straight away Bayern Munich will be the outright favourites to win this competition before it even starts with them having won the competition 5 times in the last 7 years. Ever since Hans Flick took over in November of 2019, they have been nothing short of exceptional, winning 21, drawing 1 and losing 2 in the league since joining. With the signing of Leroy Sane from Manchester City in the summer, they have added even more depth and world-class talent to their ranks meaning they are just going from strength to strength. Not to mention Robert Lewandowski who would surely have been one of the main candidates/favourites for the FIFA Ballon d’or with an outstanding 54 goals in 45 games in all competitions this season.

Borussia Dortmund are just behind Bayern as favourites to win this competition after finishing 2nd in the Bundesliga. They are building a side full of youth and excitement with the likes of Erling Haaland who scored 53 goals in all competitions for club and country at the age of just 20. Giovanni Reyna a young 17 year old American from their youth academy and the new signing of 17 year old Jude Bellingham from Birmingham City indicate that they are going to continue to use this model as a way forward for the club. It also does seem as though they are going to lose key player Jaden Sancho to Manchester United which would be a huge loss, however, the sum of money does seem as though it is going to be well over £100 million euros which would financially benefit the club for future investment.

An Outlier to keep an eye on in this year’s German cup, could be Eintracht Frankfurt. In the last 4 years, they have reached the semi-finals, the final and in 2018, they won the competition. They also possess winger Filip Kostic, who collected 14 assists last season and 9 goals, one of the best players in the league last season. If they manage to keep hold of him for the season, then, he could guide Frankfurt to a good campaign in the German Cup.
