Who will be promoted from the EFL League One?

The 2019/20 EFL League One season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and Coventry City were declared Champions with an average of 1.97 points per game. Rotherham United also gained promotion to the Championship after finishing second in the league on 1.77 points per game. The final promotion spot will be given to the playoff winner which will be contested by the teams finishing between third and sixth place.

The playoffs will be Wycombe Wanderers vs Fleetwood Town and then Portsmouth vs Oxford United with the reverse fixtures to follow, all of which will be played behind closed doors. The winner of each matchup will face off in the playoff final which will also be held behind closed doors at Wembley stadium on the 24th of May, 2020.

Despite finishing on 59 points, Wycombe Wanderers finished in third place with a points per game total of 1.74. They’re given the worst odds by the bookies to be promoted, however, manager Gareth Ainsworth will hope that this underdog status will be beneficial for the team.

Oxford United finished fourth in the table on 60 points with 17 wins from 35 games and an average of 1.71 points per game. Out of the four teams, Oxford United have been given the third best odds to gain promotion.

Portsmouth are the heavy favourites to gain promotion and have been given the best odds out of the four teams by the bookies. They finished fifth in the table on 60 points and 1.71 points per game, however, finished behind Oxford United due to their worse goal difference. Manager Kenny Jackett will believe his team has the best chance of gaining promotion and will hope the team can push until the end of the playoffs.

Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town finished in sixth place on 60 points after winning 16 games from 35 and had an average points per game total of 1.71. Fleetwood Town have been given the second-best chances of gaining promotion out of the 4 teams and will fancy their chances in their opening match against Wycombe Wanderers.
