Mainz 05 – Achim Beierlorzer

Achim Beierlorzer was born in Erlangen, West Germany in 1967. He has recently been appointed as the new head coach of Mainz 05 following the sacking of Sandro Schwarz earlier in November. It is his sixth managerial position over the course of his 17-year managerial career which started in 2002. Before then, Beierlozer enjoyed a 16-year playing career where he was employed by four clubs predominantly from Germany's lower divisions.

He started footballing life with TSV Neunkirchen in 1984 before he moved to 1.FC Nuremberg. He stated in the academy in Nuremberg for two years before graduating to the senior squad in 1986. He played 23 times for the reserve side before deciding that he was unlikely to break into the first team eleven and departed to SpVgg Jahn Forcheim in 1988. Here he would spend one season boosting his profile as a footballer and getting used to playing first team football for the first time.

He quickly earned admirers from more prestigious league clubs and after being coveted by several made the move to SpVgg Greuther Furth. It was at this club that he would play the most and best football of his career. He made nearly two centuries of league appearances in seven years with the club, scoring 44 goals in the process before moving on to his final destination as a player.

He spent six years as a player with SC Schwabach between 1996 and 2002. During this time he scored 12 goals in 122 games, giving him a goals-to-games ratio of just under one in ten. Schwabach were evidently impressed and elected to keep him on as manager after he had hung up his boots. He managed the club for a single season before moving to SV Kleinsendelbach where he would stay for six years. In 2010 he left the club. He went on a long hiatus from management which ultimately ended in 2015.

Five years after his last managerial job, Beierlorzer joining RB Leipzig as interim coach. Failing to keep the job on a permanent basis his next position was with Jahn Regensburg where he impressed pundits and earned himself a move to 1. FC Köln. He was sacked after less than a year in charge but found himself almost immediately back in a job this time with Mainz 05 who sit in 13th place in the Bundesliga table.
