Everton’s new manager

Everton found themselves in an unexpected search for a coach this summer and got into trouble. After the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid, the Caramels are trying to find an adequate replacement, but that is not an easy job. At the beginning, they hoped for the return of Davis Moyes, but he extended his contract with West Ham. Then they began negotiations with Nuno Espirito Santo, who left the Wolves, but no agreement was reached. And after all that rumors a big shock and surprise for everybody.

A coach who won the Champions League with Liverpool was officially appointed head coach of the Reds' fiercest city rival. Rafael Benítez is the new Everton’s manager. The Spanish expert signed a three-year contract and made one of the most controversial moves in English football.

Benítez has been out of work since January this year when he left Chinese Dalian Yifang, and Everton will be his third club in England. With Liverpool (2004-2010) he won the Champions League in 2005, while before leaving for China he sat on the Newcastle bench for two seasons. Sixty-one years old Benitez started his coaching career at Real Madrid B in 1993, and he also worked at Valladolid, Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Dalian.

He was the champion of Spain twice with Valencia and the winner of the UEFA Cup, with Liverpool he won the FA Cup, the Champions League, the English Super Cup and the European Super Cup, with Inter the Italian Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Liverpool and Everton are neighbors, but not as aggressive or fierce as other city rivals such as Milan and Inter, River and Boca, Spartak and Dinamo Moscow, Tottenham and Arsenal…But it did not happen often that a manager worked in both clubs. That happened this year, when Rafael Benitez agreed to work at Goodison Park as Everton manager, having previously been Liverpool manager for a long time. In fact, he is only the second manager in history to have worked for both clubs. Something like this happened 129 years ago. William Edward Barkley coached Everton in 1888 and four years later became Liverpool manager. Benitez will be the fifth manager of Everton in five years, and he arrives despite the threats he recently received in front of his house in Liverpool, when the banners read "We know where you live". Benitez left "Anfield" 11 years ago, where he brought the title of European champion to Liverpool.

“I am thrilled to lead Everton. During the negotiations about my arrival, I was impressed by the ambition of the club, which was explained to me by the people from the management. I think that this club will make great results in the future and I am determined to help them in that”, said Rafael Benitez looking confident and not to much worried about threats and pressure this period in Liverpool.

The Premier League starts on 14 August and we will see if the Benitez can bring to Everton what previous managers couldn’t and finally to attack the top 6 places on the table.
