Who is Rochdale AFC manager Brian Barry Murphy?

Brian Barry Murphy is a 40 year old manager currently managing League One side Rochdale AFC. Brian Barry Murphy was born on 27 July 1978 in Cork, Ireland and used to be a footballer for English and Irish sides such as Cork City, Bury, Sheffield Wednesday and Rochdale. He was mainly a defensive midfielder but made a few appearances in central midfield, left back and sometimes even centre back.

Brian Barry Murphy represented Cork City which was his hometown club from 1995 to 1999 making 82 appearances scoring only 2 goals. In 1999 he made his move to England as he joined Preston North End on a free transfer. At the club, he made 21 appearances from 1999 to 2003. He had an unsuccessful spell at Preston North End as he was sent out on loan to two clubs which were Southend United and Hartlepool United where he made 8 and 7 appearances respectively with his only goal being for Southend United against Leyton Orient.

In January 2003 Brian Barry Murphy joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer as he made 58 appearances from 2003 to 2004 scoring no goals. He left the club in July 2004 as he joined Bury on a free transfer where he made 218 appearances for the club between 2004 and 2010. While he was at the club he scored 13 goals, one of which was Bury’s 1000th English Football League goal which wrote his name into the history books. This also made the club the first team to score 1000 goals in all four of the English professional leagues.

Brian Barry Murphy also made 2 appearances for the Republic of Ireland under 21 side from 2003 to 2004 but failed to score a goal. After leaving Bury, Brian Barry Murphy moved on in 2010 as he joined Rochdale on a free transfer making 66 appearances and scoring only 1 goal for the club in his 8 year stint at the club as a player.

However, in March 2019, Brian Barry Murphy was appointed the caretaker manager of Rochdale AFC replacing the outgoing Keith Hill and just one month later, he was given the job full time. He finished the season in 16th place in League One cementing their survival in the league. This season, Brian Barry Murphy will want to finish in a more stable table position rather than fighting for relegation.
