Championship League 2021

Championship League is a ranking tournament that has been in the calendar since 2008. It is a non-ranking competition in every year except the 2020 season when it was a ranking tournament. It really is a very unconventional competition for snooker considering CL has a group system with points, eliminations, and play-offs. This unconventional style gives this tournament special attention and longevity because it spans over multiple months and is played on multiple occasions. Played without the audience and televised only as an internet stream this competition really is different.

The 2021 edition is played in the Ballroom of the Stadium MK in Milton Keynes just like last year when Kyren Wilson lifted the title. This is the third time in total and third time in a row that the Championship League is played in Milton Keynes. Previous editions were held in Essex (nine times), Coventry, Barnsley, and Leicester.

Championship League runs over eight groups, each consisting of seven players. From the league stage of the first seven groups the top four qualify for a play-off, the winner of which qualifies for the winners’ group. The bottom two players of each league are eliminated and the remaining four move on to the next group, where they are joined by three more players until the seventh group. The winners’ group is played identically to prior seven groups only know we declare the winner of the group as the Championship League title holder. Every match is played as best of 3.

From the 4th of January to 12th of February the first 6 groups were played. Hence, we know almost all the group winners. We just need to wait for the seventh group to be played on the 30th and the 31st of March as a warm-up for the Winners’ group played on 1st and 2nd of April.

Competitors in the seventh group are:

  1. Kurt Mafflin, Norway
  2. Yan Bingtao, China
  3. Neil Robertson, Australia
  4. Joe Perry, England
  5. Mark Williams, Wales
  6. David Gilbert, England
  7. Anthony McGill, Scotland

This is the last chance for the members of the seventh group to join the glorious Winners’ group. The battle will be tough considering there are some big guns still without the Winners’ group ticket. Just look at the names such as Neil Robertson or a three-time World Champion Mark Williams to grasp the difficulty of winning the Championship League.

Competitors in the Winners’ group are:

  1. Zhou Yuelong
  2. Graeme Dott
  3. John Higgins
  4. Judd Trump
  5. Kyren Wilson
  6. Ali Carter
  7. Undecide - winner of the group 7

When it comes to favorites to win the whole competition it becomes even harder to see anything clearly. The seven players who’ve showed the most and adopted to this unconventional play style are going at it face to face to decide the champion. Bookmakers seem to have three players as front-runners.

The first one is Judd Trump who’s been the dominant force in the world of snooker for quite some time winning five ranking titles in 2021. He won Championship League three times already and is looking to make it four in April. His recent form and the fact he is the World Number One prove difficult not to declare him as the biggest favorite.

The two-time Masters winner John Higgins is the next in line, the Scotsman is looking to gain his third Championship League and the twentieth non-ranking title.

Kyren Wilson as the defending champion is the third favorite to become only the second player to defend the title in Championship League after Higgins did it in 2018.

The Championship League 2021 will be held until 2 april 2021 - two weeks before the start of World Snooker Championship 2021.
