Mens Handball Tokyo 2020

The only non-European country to win a medal in men's handball is Republic of Korea, who took silver at the Seoul 1988 Games. That country has, however, been a perennial contender in the women's competition, winning six medals including gold at Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992.

At the Rio 2016 Games, Denmark, France and Germany won the gold, silver and bronze medals in the men's competition. In the women's tournament, Russia, France and Norway won the gold, silver and bronze medals.

As handball continues to grow in popularity around the world, men's and women's teams from Africa, South America and the Middle East will also contend for medals - together, of course, with host nation Japan.

As of the start of 2020, the host country Japan has qualified along with Denmark (the World Champion of 2019), Argentina (2019 Pan American Games winner) and Bahrain.

12 teams will compete in the men’s handball competition to be held at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Of these 12 spots, one is reserved for the hosts, with a further four continental spots and one for the world champions – to make six in total.

The six remaining spots for Tokyo 2020 will then be filled through three Olympic Qualification Tournaments (OQT) to be held from 16/17-19 April 2020. Each tournament will feature four teams each, a total of 12 teams.

Teams ranked 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th at Germany/Denmark 2019 will automatically qualify through to the Olympic Qualification Tournaments. 2nd and 7th will be in Tournament #1 (OQT1), 3rd and 6th will be in Tournament #2 (OQT2) and 4th and 5th will be in Tournament #3 (OQT3).

The remaining two teams in each OQT will consist of two from the best-ranked continent at Germany/Denmark 2019, two from the second best continent and one each from the third and fourth ranked continent – a total of six teams. These are called qualification slots (QS).

OQT1 will have teams from the third (QS3) and fourth best (QS4) continent, OQT2 will have one team each from the best (QS5) and second best (QS2) continent and OQT3 will also have one team each from the best (QS1) and second best (QS6) continent.

Bahrain will play in the men's handball tournament at the Olympic Games for the first time, after beating South Korea in the final of the Asian qualifier in Doha. South Korea, the red-hot favourites to secure the single Tokyo 2020 berth on offer at the competition at Duhail Handball Sports Hall, led 15-13 at half-time. But Bahrain roared back in the second half to record a shock 34-29 win.

For the host team Japan, 2020 Japan Olympics handball will be the first time for men to participate in the Olympic Games for the first time in 32 years and girls for the first time in 44 years. Handball is one of the most frequent competitions held every day from the day after the opening ceremony until the closing day.
