2019 World Championships in Athletics - Men's 1,500 metres

Runners compete over 3-and-3-quarter laps of a 400m track. They make a bunched standing start and can break immediately for the inside.

History

The mile (1609m) was a common middle-distance race in Great Britain and the USA. However, since 1896, the metric 1500m has been contested by men at every Olympic Games. But it wasn’t until the 1972 Games (Munich) that women raced over this distance.

Did you know?

In 1998, when Hicham El Guerrouj set his world record of 3:26.00 in Rome, he ran less than 55 seconds for each lap.

Gold standard

Kenyan and North African male athletes have dominated in recent times. But the USA and Great Britain also have strong traditions. Russia takes the fight to the North African nations among the women.

Hicham El Guerrouj

Hicham won four consecutive world titles from 1997 to 2003. In 2004, the Moroccan finally secured that elusive Olympic gold. He is also the current world record-holder for the mile with his 3:43.13.

Svetlana Masterkova

Originally an 800m runner, Svetlana achieved far more at 1500m. At the 1996 Olympic Games, the Russian became the second woman to land the 800m/1500m gold double. She later won world (1999) and the European (1998) titles. She currently holds the world record for the mile at 4:12.56.

2019 World Championships

There is a strong Kenyan presence in the 1500m with training partners Elijah Manangoi and Timothy Cheruiyot both confirmed.

Manangoi (World champion), had the beating of Cheruiyot at both the African Championships and Commonwealth Games last year but Cheruiyot overturned these results to win the Diamond League final in Zurich.

“I’m delighted to be kicking off my Diamond League season in Doha,” said Cheruiyot, who broke the 3:30 barrier for the distance twice on the Diamond League circuit in 2018. “I’ve had a long winter of training in Nairobi and I can’t wait to race the best in the world once again.

“My aim is to be back here in October for the World Championships so it’s a unique chance to experience the new track.”
