2019 World Championships in Athletics - Men’s 400 m hurdles

How it works

Athletes run once around a four hundred metre track and clear 10 evenly-spaced hurdles in the process. They run in lanes, starting from blocks placed in staggered positions.

A reaction time (measured by sensors on the blocks) of less than 0.100 is deemed a false start and all the runners are recalled. Any athlete responsible for a false start is disqualified immediately. An athlete can also be disqualified if he runs or steps outside their designated lane.

Men clear hurdles that are 91.4cm (36in) high. If touched the hurdles are easily knocked down, which allows the athlete to continue even if he collides with them.

History

Circa 1860, was when the first 440-yard hurdles race was staged in Oxford, England. Competitors had to tackle 12 huge, 100cm wooden barriers that were sunk into the ground.

At the 1900 Olympics, the four hundred metre hurdles became a standard discipline for men. 84 years later, women contested the event at the Games in Los Angeles.

Did you know?

In 1984, when Nawal El Moutawakel (Morocco) won the inaugural women’s title, she became the first African female Olympic champion, as well as the first champion from an Islamic nation.

Gold standard

The USA has racked up eighteen Olympic titles in the men’s event. The Caribbean nations also pose a strong threat. Surprisingly USA’s women have never won Olympic gold but they remain one of the stronger nations, along with Jamaica and Russia.

Icons

Edwin Moses

Unbeaten for 122 races between 1977 and 1987, Edwin Moses is the greatest 400m hurdler. The long-striding US athlete landed Olympic gold in 1976 and 1984 and won two world titles (1983 and 1987).

Sally Gunnell

The Brit is the only woman to simultaneously hold world, Olympic, European and Commonwealth titles. She dominated the event between 1992 and 1994.

Reigning Champion

Karsten Warholm won gold in the four hundred metre hurdles at the 2017 European U23 Championships, setting a championship record of 48.37 s. He also won silver in the four hundred metre with a time of 45.75 s. In August, he won gold in the four hundred metre hurdles at the 2017 World Championships with a time of 48.35 s. Two weeks after his success at the World Championships, he improved upon his own Norwegian record in the four hundred metre hurdles with a time of 48.22 s at the 2017 Weltklasse Zürich.
