Who is Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan?

Graham Coughlan is a 44 year old manager who was born in Dublin, Ireland on November 18th 1974. He’s played for many clubs including Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Southend United mainly as a centre back. He is currently the Bristol Rovers manager after being appointed in 2019 after being the caretaker manager since 2018.

When Graham Coughlan was 21 years old, Blackburn Rovers bought him in 1994 as he failed to impress making only 11 appearances. He had two loan moves to Swindon Town and then Livingston where he joined the latter permanently in 1999. He made a half-century of appearances for Livingston before he joined Plymouth Argyle in 2001 where he became a huge part of the side making 177 appearances. He got into the PFA Division Three team of the year for the 2001-02 season and was their top goal scorer and named player of the year which is incredible for a centre back. The season after he was named their vice captain since he was so influential on the field before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 2005.

In the 2005-06 season he was named Sheffield Wednesday player of the year which was the 5th player of the season honour of his career. In 2007 he left on loan to Burnley due to the manager Brian Laws telling him he was surplus to requirements and was released from his contract. He made 2 appearances for Burnley as he then went to Rotherham United. After Rotherham United he then left to Shrewsbury Town where he eventually became the club captain after making 78 appearances. In 2010 he signed for Southend United before he retired in 2013 where he took up a coaching role.

In 2018 Graham Coughlan joined Bristol Rovers as a defensive coach before being made the caretaker coach in December of the same year. He replaced outgoing managers Darrell Clarke and Marcus Stewart where he impressed as the club made him the permanent manager in January 2019. He guided the club to a 15th placed finish which was a solid finish for the Bristol side, next season however, he’ll be hoping to finish much higher than last season if he is to higher his reputation as a manager. If he is to do this however, he’ll need the board to back him and give him the players he needs, in the positions he needs.
