Crawley Town – John Yems

Born in 1959, John Yems is the recently appointed manager of Crawley Town following the sacking of Sean O'Driscoll earlier in the season. Crawley sit in 16th place in the League Two table with no wins in their last five games. For a side who have long harboured play-off aspirations and with a relatively significant financial backing behind the side, this form was not acceptable and therefore a change of manager was in order.

Yems is something of a left-field appointment in many ways. The chief among these is the fact that the Crawley Town job is his first senior role as a manager at any level. Yems is also unusual for a manager in that when he started his career in the game, he jumped straight into the coaching side of things and has had very little experience of playing the game to a particularly high standard. Having said this, Yems is a man with a good reputation within the game and has been waiting for years for this chance to prove himself as a gaffer.

In 2006, Yems was appointed to his first position as a coach with London club Fulham who at that point were bouncing between the Premier League and Championship divisions. He then moved on to fellow London club Millwall where he stayed for around a year before being appointed as caretaker manager for the club he now oversees permanently, Crawley Town. He was relieved of his duties at the end of the campaign. He then undertook a new position with Grays Athletic as their Chief Scout.

He moved back into senior coaching when he was appointed assistant manager at Exeter City in 2008. He kept this position for a year before opting to go back into scouting, this time with Torquay United. He then spent another year coaching with Gillingham before being given the title Football Operations Manager with Bournemouth FC where he stayed until the start of last year. After being made redundant, he took another scouting position with Newcastle United. And now, Yems has been appointed permanent manager of Crawley Town. The coach will be brimming with pride at getting the job he briefly held back in 2006 on a permanent basis. He will be hoping to turn around their less than convincing season and steer them in the direction of League One where their fans have dreamt of playing for some years.
