Gary Caldwell – Exeter City

In October 2022 Exeter City were “forced” to search for new manager as theirs left the job and went on to search for a new adventure in Rotherham United. The search for a new manager wasn’t easy for this team. As their president said: “We are not a secret anymore, people know what this club is about. We will need more of the same, we have always had appointed managers that respected the ownership of the club, but also the DNA which is about the youth, about the way we play and the way we treat everybody. That's what we want them to buy into and I'm as confident as I can be that there's going to be a considerable number of people that do fit that bill.”

In the end, however, the choice fell on the Scottish football legend Gary Caldwell. He was working as assistant manager in Scotish side Hibernian when he was offered managerial place in Exeter. Caldwell has very rich career as a player. He was playing as central defender and was the main security in the last line in all the teams he has played. He started his professional career in Newcastle United, but imidiately was loaned to Darlington, then Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County. In 2004 he made permanent transfer to Hibernian. He finally settled and found himslef in Scottish football and when he joined Celtic in 2006 he made the transfer of his career.

He became Celtic’s captain and one of the most reliable players in the team. With Celtic he won the Scottish Premier league twice, Scottish Cup once and Scottish League Cup one time.

In 2010 he moved to Wigan and was part of one of the best chapters in this club’s history as this team as total underdog won the FA Cup in 2012/13 season. Caldwell finished his playing career in Wigan, but also started his career as manager there. He was also manager of Chesterfield and Partick Thistle before joining Exeter City. He can proudly say that he won promotion with Wigan from League One to English Championship which is great succcess for young managers in such tough competition.

“As a supporter-owned club, Exeter City is unique and it was vitally important that we chose the right person to continue our journey. The club is in a strong position, having been promoted to League One and made a great start to the campaign, which sees us in eighth position in the table. Gary brings a great deal of experience to our club and we’re excited and optimistic for the future.” said Nick Hawker chairman of Exeter City.
