Who is Nigel Clough, Mansfield Town's manager?

Nigel Clough was born in Sunderland, England on 19 March 1966. He is the current manager of Mansfield Town and he used to be a professional footballer playing for big clubs such as Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Manchester City as he played predominantly in attack but made many appearances in midfield.

As a player, Nigel Clough started out at Nottingham Forest. After making 311 appearances between 1984-1993 scoring 101 goals. In the 1985-86 season, he scored 15 goals in the first division in a campaign where they finished eighth in the league. The next season, Nigel Clough scored 14 goals where the club also finished eighth. In the summer of 1988 Italian side, Pisa offered £1.5m for the attacker but Nottingham Forest turned it down which was the correct decision as they finished third in the next season. Nigel Clough won the League Cup in 1989 and 1990 and was the clubs top scorer for 8 consecutive years before moving on to Liverpool in 1993.

Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign Nigel Clough as they shelled out £2.75m for the attacker where he only made 39 appearances and scored 7 goals. In 1996 he was sold to Manchester City for £1.5m, he also made 39 appearances from 1996 to 1998 scoring 4 goals. During his tenure at Manchester City, he was loaned out to Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday as he struggled to make an impact at either side before leaving on a free transfer to Burton Albion where he played for the rest of his career. He also made 14 appearances for the English National team but he failed to score an international goal. Nigel Clough has been the manager of Burton Albion FC since December 2015 as he replaced Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink left to join Queens Park Rangers. In the same season, Nigel Clough guided the club to promotion to the Championship in impressive displays across the season. The next season was a struggle as they finished 20th and just about survived in the Championship. However, in the 2017-18 season, Burton Albion finished 23rd in the Championship and were relegated to the EFL League One.

In the 2018-19 season, Burton Albion FC finished 9th in the League as they finished in a solid mid table position. But their most impressive displays came in the League Cup where they reached the semi final losing to eventual winners Manchester City 10-0 on aggregate.
