Who is Tranmeres Manager?

Mike Jackson was born in Cheshire on the 4th of December 1973 making him currently 46 years of age. He started his playing career at Crewe in 1992 and after only 5 appearances he left for Bury a year later where he played 125 games, scoring 9 times. In this spell he helped Bury reach two play offs in the 4th division and after 5 years with The Shakers, PNE signed him for 162 thousand pounds. At the Lilywhites, Jackson hugely impressed and was a sturdy, fan favourite playing centre-half as he appeared 251 times. Towards the end of his stint at PNE, he fell out of favour and was sent on loan to Tranmere Rovers for the second half of the 2002/3 season. Then in May 2004 he signed on a free transfer for Tranmere with a two year deal, making 84 appearances.

In 2006, leaving from a club on a free transfer once again, he joined Simon Grayson at Blackpool at the start of the 2006/7 season and he scored his 1st goal for the club in an encounter in late August against Bristol City, where they ran out 4-2 winners. Jackson became an instrumental part of the Blackpool FC side as he captained them to the promotion to the Championship. Then the season after, he slowly faded out of the picture at Blackpool, before leaving on a free in 2008. Mike Jackson then preceded to finish his playing career at Shrewsbury Town for a short two years. In this time Jackson hardly played at all, making only 21 appearances because of a persisting injury, so to not risk it any further, he remained at the club for the final season as a player/coach in an attempt to start his coaching career.

He resumed his coaching role at the club when Graham Turner spent 4 seasons in charge of the club from 2010-2014 before handing in his resignation. Jackson was then appointed caretaker manager and after a couple of good results was given a contract that lasted until the end of the 2013/14 season to prove himself as the right man to take the club forward. However, Mike Jackson could not proceed to keep The Shrews up and therefore had his duties as head coach taken away from him. Nevertheless, Jackson was kept on at Shrewsbury to be the assistant to new manager Micky Mellon. This partnership lasted two years but after only 2 wins in 11 games in the 2016/17 season, they both left the club by mutual consent in October.

Mike Jackson had made a good relationship with Micky Mellon and when Mellon was announced as Tranmere Rovers manager in 2018, Jackson once again joined him as his assistant. Micky Mellon and Jackson reigned superior in the National League winning promotion to League two through the play offs. Then the next year, with the odds stacked against Tranmere to survive in the league, they crept into the play offs once again and then won the final 1-0 against Newport County. Unfortunately, in their League One campaign they narrowly got relegated after finishing just behind AFCW on points per game.

When the season had concluded, Micky Mellon left to join Dundee united as their manager, a massive loss for the club given all the work he had put in. However, the Tranmere board decided to hand over the reigns to Mike Jackson.

Mike Jackson was sacked on 31 October 2020.
