Who is Walsall's manager?

Darrell Clarke is the current manager of Walsall FC after being appointed in May 2019. Clarke was born in Mansfield, England on 16 December 1977. Previously, Darrell Clarke played football for clubs around England such as Mansfield Town, Hartlepool United and Port Vale usually in midfield.

When he was 10, Clarke joined the youth academy at Mansfield Town where he broke into the first team in 1995. He made 159 competitive appearances for the club scoring 24 goals in his 6 year stint at the club. In 2001, Clarke joined Hartlepool United as he made 127 appearances and scored 19 goals as he spent 6 years at the club. During Clarke’s time at Hartlepool United, Clarke had 3 loan spells at Stockport County, Port Vale and Rochdale before joining Salisbury City permanently in 2007.

At Salisbury, he spent 3 years as a player before turning to management in 2010. However, Clarke kept playing until 2013 as he made 138 competitive appearances and scored 12 goals over the 6 year stint where he made numerous appearances as the club’s captain.

Darrell Clarke began his managerial career in July 2010 as he became player-manager of Salisbury City. In his 3 year stint at the club, Clarke won the 2011 Southern Football League Premier Division playoff along with the 2013 Conference South playoff. In June 2013, he was named as assistant manager of Bristol Rovers before being promoted to manager in March 2014. At Bristol Rovers, Clarke won the Conference Premier playoffs in 2015 along with promotion to the EFL League One in the 2015-16 season. He was also named Conference Premier Manager of the Month in September 2014, December 2014 and February 2015. In March 2016, Darrell Clarke won the Football League Two manager of the month award.

Clarke worked at Bristol Rovers until December 2018 until May 2019, where Darrell Clarke was appointed as manager of Walsall after agreeing a 3 year contract at the club following their relegation to the EFL League Two. The Walsall fans will be hoping Clarke can be the man to take the club back into the EFL League One after a disappointing 2018-19 season. If he is to do so, the club will need to back him as he begins his pre season preparations with his new group of players.
