Who is Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth?

Gareth Ainsworth was born on 10 May 1973 in Blackburn, England and is 46 years old. Ainsworth is the current manager of Wycombe Wanderers and has been in the job since 2012. Gareth Ainsworth was originally a footballer playing in midfield for clubs such as Preston North End, Lincoln City, Port Vale and Wimbledon.

Ainsworth started his career in the Blackburn Rovers youth academy in 1989. After struggling to impress, he left to join Northwich Victoria in 1991 as he made 14 appearances scoring 4 goals. Preston North End gave him a contract in 1992 before selling him to Cambridge United and then loaning him back to Northwich Victoria. He then rejoined Preston North End in 1993 as he made 82 competitive appearances scoring 12 goals before being sold again to Lincoln City for £25,000.

At Lincoln City, Ainsworth made 83 appearances as he scored 37 goals at his time at Lincoln. In 1997, Port Vale broke their transfer record by acquiring the services of Gareth Ainsworth for £500,000 and won the club’s Player of the Season award after the 1997-98 season. The club turned down a £1,000,000 bid from Leeds United in the following summer as they looked to build on the previous season.

Wimbledon made a bid of £2,000,000 in November 1998 which was accepted by Port Vale. After 5 seasons, Ainsworth only made 36 appearances scoring 6 goals in his time at the club before moving on to Preston North End and Walsall on loan before permanently joining Cardiff City in 2003. After struggling to impress at Cardiff, Ainsworth moved to Queens Park Rangers and then finally Wycombe Wanderers before slowly moving into management at the latter club.

After previous manager Gary Waddock was sacked in September 2012, Wycombe Wanderers appointed Gareth Ainsworth as caretaker manager and was appointed as their permanent manager in November 2012. Since being appointed as manager, Ainsworth has finished 15th, 22nd, 4th, 13th, 9th, 3rd (promoted to EFL League One) and then 17th in League One.

Gareth Ainsworth has only won 1 individual award in the LMA Manager of the Year 2014-15 and will be desperate to add to his honours list. Ainsworth has taken Wycombe to another level and the fans will be hoping for bigger things next season under their influential manager who’ll want to add to his honours list and improve his reputation.
